1. Private boat charter to two Elafiti islands
The best boat day out of Dubrovnik is a private charter with a small operator like Adriatic Explore or Dubrovnik Boats, targeting two Elafiti islands rather than the standard three. A 6-8 metre RIB with skipper costs 450-650 EUR for up to eight people for a full day (roughly 55-80 EUR per head), leaves from Gruž at 09:00, and lets you pick your own coves rather than following a fleet.
The winning itinerary: Šipan for a quiet morning swim at Šunj cove and lunch at Kod Marka (grilled fish 25 EUR, book ahead), then Koločep in the afternoon for the Blue Cave swim-through and a beer at Villa Ruža. Skip Lopud unless someone in the group insists — it's the most crowded of the three. Private charter beats every group tour on freedom, but requires organising a group. Worth every euro if you have six friends.
2. Sunset cruise on a traditional wooden gulet
Several operators run 2.5-hour sunset cruises from the Old Port on restored wooden karaka or gulet-style boats, 35-45 EUR per person including a glass of Croatian sparkling wine. Departs around 18:30 in July-August, earlier as the days shorten. The route goes around Lokrum, past Cavtat headland, and back for the exact sunset moment behind Lovrijenac fort.
This ranks second because it's the highest ratio of atmosphere to effort in the region — no swimming, no packing, just two and a half hours of coastline glowing pink from a wooden deck. Karaka Dubrovnik's ship is the most photogenic and books up two weeks ahead in summer. Bring a light layer; even in July the wind on the water at 20:30 has bite. Not for kids under six — long stretches without stopping.
3. Kayak-and-snorkel around Lokrum
Not a boat tour strictly, but same category. Adriatic Kayak Tours' three-hour paddle from Pile beach around Lokrum island includes a snorkel stop at a small cave on the south side and a cheap wine finish. 45 EUR per person, groups of 12-16 with two guides, departing 09:30 or 16:30 in summer.
It ranks here because you’re properly on the water, not looking at it from a deck, and the perspective back at the walls from a kayak is uniquely low and dramatic. You need basic swimming ability and no back problems. Skip if it's windy — the guides will cancel above 15 knots but marginal days can be uncomfortable. The 16:30 departure gives you the sunset over Lovrijenac at the end. My preferred first booking for active visitors.
4. Full-day catamaran to Mljet National Park
Group operators like Dubrovnik Boats and Kompas Travel run 09:00-18:00 catamarans from Gruž to Mljet for 75-95 EUR per person including national park entry and lunch on board or at a park restaurant. Faster than the public G&V Line ferry and includes the park guide.
Ranks fourth because it's efficient — one price, one boat, one guide, dropped at Pomena, walked to the lakes, bike or walk to the monastery islet, back on the boat by 16:00. The catch: you’re on someone else's schedule. If you’re staying two nights in Dubrovnik and want Mljet without organising ferries and park tickets, this is the pick. Independent travellers should take the public catamaran (30 EUR round trip) and buy park entry there — cheaper and more flexible, but a longer day.
5. Group Elafiti three-island tour
The classic Dubrovnik boat tour: Koločep, Lopud, Šipan in one day for 45-65 EUR per person, departing 09:00 from the Old Port on a 40-50 passenger boat, lunch included, back around 18:00. Every hotel concierge in town sells this and every operator's version is broadly the same.
It ranks fifth because it's efficient but rushed — 90 minutes on each island isn’t enough for either a proper swim or a proper look. Lopud gets 90 minutes at the town beach, not enough time to walk to sandy Šunj on the far side. Lunch is buffet quality, wine is included and cheap. Fine if you want a low-effort sampler day and don’t mind crowds; skip if you’d rather see one island properly. Kids often love it.
6. Blue Cave and Green Cave speedboat tour
Half-day speedboat tours (four hours, 55-75 EUR) run from Gruž to a small blue cave near Koločep and a green cave near Šipan, with a swimming stop and a beach visit. Faster boats mean less time on the water and more time in the caves. Departs 09:00 or 14:00.
It ranks last because the caves are genuinely pretty but not on the scale of Vis's Blue Cave (which is a full-day trip and beyond this region). Fine for a half-day if you don’t have time for the full Elafiti circuit and want something more active than a sunset sail. The 14:00 departure gives you the caves in afternoon light, which is when the blue actually glows. Skip on choppy days; the caves close when swell exceeds one metre.

Full-day group Elafiti tour is genuinely kid-friendly — big stable boat, lots of stops, buffet lunch, calm swimming at Lopud. Sunset cruise is too still for under-sixes. Kayak tour needs age 12+. Private charter is fantastic with kids if you can afford it because you control the pace and lunch stops.
Those are bus tours, not boat tours — different category. Kotor is a 2.5-hour drive each way for a lovely medieval town on a bay, worth doing if you’re staying five nights or more. Bring your passport; it's a Montenegro border crossing. Mostar is four hours each way and you get about two hours in the city, honestly not enough.
Private charters two to three weeks ahead. Sunset gulet cruises 7-10 days. Group tours 2-3 days. Kayak tours can often be booked the day before. Everything last-minute in high season is possible but limits your choice of operator. Book direct through operator websites rather than concierges to avoid 15-20% mark-ups.
