Eight places to actually get in the Adriatic around Dubrovnik, ranked by water quality, atmosphere and how far you’ll walk with a wet towel.

1. Sveti Jakov beach, Ploče

Twenty minutes' walk east of the Old Town, or a five-minute taxi (8 EUR), Sveti Jakov is the beach locals send visiting friends to. A pebble crescent below a cliff staircase (162 steps down, count them on the way back up), sheltered water, a view straight back to the walls and Lokrum, and a beach bar that grills fresh fish for 20 EUR. Sunset here is the region's most underrated.

It ranks first because the water is properly clean — depth drops quickly to swimmable within three metres of shore — and the vibe is calmer than the closer city beaches. Sunbed and umbrella pair costs 25 EUR in July, or bring your own towel and use the free public strip at the far end. Arrive before 11:00 for parking (very limited) or take the number 5 bus to Vila Dubrovnik and walk down.

2. Betina Cave, Lokrum

The east side of Lokrum island is a sequence of rocky bathing platforms cut into the pine-shaded coast, with Betina Cave (Betinska Špilja) the standout — a sea cave you swim into with clear turquoise water and dramatic ceiling light. Fifteen-minute walk from the Lokrum ferry pier; look for the marked path on the east coast route. Total cost: the 27 EUR Lokrum ferry ticket, which also covers island entry.

This is proper swimming rather than beach lounging. The platforms have ladders but the rock is sharp — water shoes are a good idea. Bring a snorkel; visibility is 10+ metres on calm days. Combine with the Dead Sea saltwater lake on the south of the island for a variety of dips. Last ferry back is 19:00 in July-August, 17:00 in May-June and September. Don’t miss it.

3. Pasjača beach, Konavle

Forty-five minutes south of Dubrovnik by car, Pasjača sits at the base of a 250-metre cliff below the village of Popovići. A steep tunnel-and-staircase path drops you onto a small pebble beach with some of the clearest water anywhere in Croatia. National Geographic named it a best European beach in 2019 and the crowds followed, so timing matters.

Go on a weekday, arrive by 10:00, and be prepared for the 15-minute descent (and painful ascent). No facilities beyond a small seasonal drinks cart at the top. Bring water, food, everything. Ranks third rather than first because getting there is an event and the beach is small — 60 people fills it. Pair with lunch at Konavoski Dvori or in Cavtat on the way back. Skip if wind is forecast, the surge here is real.

4. Šunj beach, Lopud

Šunj is the reason to take the ferry to Lopud. A rare-for-Dalmatia sandy beach on the far side of the island, 25 minutes' walk from the ferry pier across the island, or a golf-cart taxi for 5 EUR. Shallow water gradually deepening — the only beach in this region that genuinely suits small children who can’t swim. Two beach bars, one restaurant, changing rooms.

The catamaran from Gruž takes 55 minutes and costs 6 EUR each way; last boat back around 20:00 in summer. Ranks fourth because the sand is soft but the beach gets busy from 11:00 onwards, and Lopud itself has almost no cars, which is either charming or inconvenient depending on your luggage. Ideal day trip with kids under 10. Pair with lunch at the Lopud harbour front.

5. Buža, Old Town walls

Buža is not a beach but a hole in the wall — literally, buža means "hole" — where a cliff bar on the south side of the Old Town lets you swim off the rocks into deep water with the walls rising above you. Drinks cost 8-12 EUR (a Karlovačko beer is 6), which is the entry fee since access itself is free. Signposted from within the Old Town: "cold drinks with the most beautiful view."

Ranks fifth because the swimming is dramatic but limited — you jump in from rocks, swim a bit, climb the ladder back up. Not for weak swimmers, and definitely not in choppy weather when the surge slams the rock. Come at 17:00 for the sun on the walls and a swim before dinner. Two Buža bars exist; Buža II (further west) has the better swimming ladder.

6. Lapad Bay (Sunset Beach / Uvala Lapad)

The main Lapad bay is a 500-metre curve of pebble beach with dozens of restaurants and bars along the promenade behind it. Not glamorous but properly convenient — walk from any Lapad hotel, showers and toilets included in the sunbed hire (18 EUR for two loungers and umbrella), water clean and calm because the bay faces west into a sheltered inlet.

It ranks sixth because it's crowded and generic, but it works. The far western end, near Hotel Kompas, is quieter and has better rocks for jumping in. The number 6 bus from Pile Gate takes 15 minutes and costs 2 EUR. This is where you go when you want to swim without a project — no ferries, no staircases, no cliffs. Kids friendly, family friendly, forgettable but functional.

7. Copacabana, Babin Kuk

On the Babin Kuk peninsula at the far end of Lapad, Copacabana is a pebble-and-concrete beach with proper facilities — waterslides, jet skis, parasailing, banana boats, the full activity beach set-up. Sunbed 15 EUR. Not remotely authentic but genuinely useful if you have kids aged 8-14 who need entertaining beyond the swim itself. Bus 8 from Pile Gate, 20 minutes.

Ranks seventh because the vibe is package-holiday rather than Adriatic-authentic — think Benidorm-lite rather than Riviera. The water is clean, though, and the west-facing aspect gives good afternoon sun until late. Restaurants are middling; better to eat in Lapad village and just swim here. Adults without kids should probably rank this lower or skip entirely. Everyone else, it's fine.

8. Danče, west of Pile

Danče is a small rocky cove five minutes' walk west of Pile Gate, tucked below a Franciscan cemetery. No sand, no facilities, no bar — just concrete platforms, a small ladder into deep water, and a view back at Lovrijenac fort. Free. Locals swim here at dawn year-round; visitors can join them from May to October when the water is over 20°C.

It ranks last because it's the smallest and least equipped, but that's also the appeal — if you’re staying in the Old Town and want a 20-minute swim without a bus or ferry, Danče is walkable and genuinely calm. Come at 07:30 with a coffee from Cogito. Skip in bad weather; the exposed platforms get slippery. Not for children — no gradual entry, deep from the ladder.
