Why the boat shuttle is the killer amenity here
Dubrovnik's road traffic in July and August is genuinely bad. The single coastal road bottlenecks at Pile Gate, buses crawl, taxis get stuck, and a 3km distance from a Lapad hotel to the Old Town can take 40 minutes in a taxi at 19:00. The hotels that run boat shuttles from their private jetties to the Old Port bypass this entirely — the water journey is 8 to 20 minutes regardless of season, weather permitting. If you are staying outside the walls in summer, a hotel boat shuttle is a bigger amenity upgrade than a pool or a spa.
The shuttles run from roughly Easter to late October, weather dependent. Bura wind days (November to March, and occasionally in summer) can cancel service. Most shuttles run every 30 to 60 minutes from 09:00 to 22:00, dropping guests at the Old Port (below the Ploče Gate) and picking up from the same jetty. Below are the seven hotels whose shuttles genuinely work as regular transport, ranked by frequency, quality of the boat, and how much the shuttle actually changes your holiday.
1. Villa Dubrovnik — the every-30-minutes shuttle
Villa Dubrovnik runs a small boat shuttle every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 22:30, taking about 8 minutes to reach the Old Port. From €600 room rate. The boat is a proper 12-seat launch with a canopy, not a rubber dinghy, and the crew are boat professionals. This is the shuttle that most feels like an amenity rather than a compromise: it runs on time, holds you comfortably, and the arrival at the Old Port stone jetty below the walls is one of the small magical moments of the city.
The reason to book Villa Dubrovnik for the shuttle: the hotel is on a cliff with a single steep road access, so taxis are inconvenient and expensive. The shuttle makes the location work. In practice, guests use it 3-4 times per day — into town for lunch, back for the pool, into town for dinner, back to sleep. Without the shuttle the hotel would feel isolated; with it, you have the best of both worlds. The shuttle stops at 22:30, so late dinners require a €25 taxi back — factor this into planning.
2. Hotel Excelsior — the shorter but frequent
The Excelsior runs a shuttle every 45 minutes during the day, dropping you at the Old Port about 5 minutes away by boat. From €420. The distance is shorter than from Villa Dubrovnik because the Excelsior is already just outside Ploče Gate — walking is 12 minutes, so the shuttle is a convenience rather than a necessity. But on hot days or when you are dressed for dinner, the boat ride is a nicer arrival than the sweat-walk up the coast road.
The shuttle operates roughly 09:00 to 21:00, less frequently than Villa Dubrovnik's. Best used for the return trip — you walk to town in the morning, take the boat back for a sunset arrival at the hotel jetty just below Banje beach. The boat itself is smaller (8 seats) and open-air, so wind and light rain can affect the experience. Skip the shuttle if you are staying at the Excelsior mainly for its own facilities; it makes more sense as a lunch-back-to-town service.
3. Grand Villa Argentina — the sister-hotel shuttle
Grand Villa Argentina runs a shared shuttle with the Excelsior (both owned by Adriatic Luxury Hotels) from a jetty just west of the Excelsior. From €400. Same schedule and boat as Excelsior. The Villa Argentina is a hundred metres up the hill from the jetty, so it is a short but noticeable walk up in the return direction. The shuttle helps but does not entirely solve the hill problem — some guests take it once and go back to taxis.
Best for guests who want the Argentina's more historic atmosphere (converted villas rather than a purpose-built hotel) and can accept the walk from the jetty. The alternative is a 6-minute walk from the hotel to Ploče Gate directly, along the coastal road. In summer the boat is faster than the walk once you factor in the traffic through Ploče Gate area. Book the shuttle-inclusive rate rather than paying per-trip; the mathematics works out cheaper if you use it more than twice a day.
4. Hotel More, Lapad — the cross-bay run
Hotel More runs a boat shuttle from its Lapad cliff jetty around the peninsula to the Old Port. From €260. The journey is 20 minutes each way — genuinely a bit of a trip, but it beats the 40-minute bus with two connections and the €25 taxi with traffic. Frequency is roughly every 90 minutes from 10:00 to 20:00, less useful than the shorter-run shuttles but valuable given the alternative.
The catch is timing: with fewer departures, you are committed to a schedule. Miss the 18:00 return and you are getting a taxi. The upside is the boat ride itself — the coast from Lapad around the peninsula past Boninovo is scenic and the arrival at the Old Port is unforgettable. Best used as a once-a-day service for the trip in or out, with taxis or buses for the other direction. Book Hotel More for its own qualities (cave bar, cliff setting); treat the shuttle as a bonus rather than the reason.
5. Hotel Kazbek, Kono — the summer service
Hotel Kazbek runs a shuttle from a jetty near the property to the Old Port in summer only — roughly June to September, weather permitting. From €280. Frequency is limited — three or four departures a day — so this is more of an occasional service than a regular commute. The boat ride from Gruž bay round to the Old Port takes about 25 minutes.
Best use: the shuttle into town in the late morning, a lunch and afternoon in the Old Town, a taxi or the shuttle back in the early evening. The service does not run late enough for post-dinner returns. If you are booking Kazbek in shoulder season (April, May, October) the shuttle may not run at all — check specifically before booking. The hotel is worth staying at for its own qualities; the shuttle is a July-August bonus rather than a year-round feature.
6-7. Sun Gardens and Sheraton Riviera — the distance runs
Sun Gardens Dubrovnik runs a boat shuttle from Orašac to the Old Port in high season only — July and August, occasionally June and September. From €280. The ride is 40 minutes each way, so this is a proper trip rather than a commute. Frequency is two or three departures per day. Best used as a once-per-trip service for a full day in the Old Town, returning by boat in the early evening. Alternative is the shuttle bus, which takes 45 minutes in traffic.
Sheraton Riviera in Srebreno runs a shuttle from June through September, again as a limited service (two or three departures daily). About 25 minutes to the Old Port. From €200. Both hotels are far enough from the city that the boat is essentially a scenic transfer rather than convenient transport, but on a still summer day it beats the bus. Book these hotels for their own beach and spa features; the shuttle is a nice-to-have. Confirm at booking whether the shuttle operates during your dates.
What to know before you book
Weather cancels the shuttles. The bura wind (dry, cold, from the north) can blow at force 6 or 7 with little warning and shuts down small-boat operations. In winter (November to March) most shuttles do not run at all. In summer, cancellations are rare but happen — the hotels put on shuttle buses or reimburse taxis when the boat is off. Do not plan around the shuttle being 100% available; treat it as a reliable-most-days amenity.
The Old Port drop-off is at a stone jetty just outside Ploče Gate. From there it is a 30-second walk into the walls. This is genuinely the best arrival in Dubrovnik — the walls rising above you, the Old Port harbour full of small boats, the Ploče Gate opening onto the medieval city. Take a picture the first time. The return trip in the golden hour before sunset is worth staying out for even if you have to wait for the last shuttle. Villa Dubrovnik's 21:30 return with the walls lit up is the best commute in the city, hands down.
