What to expect at Sponza Palace
Sponza Palace stands at the eastern end of the Stradun, its Gothic-Renaissance arcade fronting Luža Square. Built between 1516 and 1522 as the Republic's customs house and mint, it is the rare Old Town building that survived the catastrophic 1667 earthquake completely intact — every other major structure had to be rebuilt. Inside, the airy stone courtyard holds Dubrovnik's State Archives, one of the most complete medieval trading archives in Europe, with documents dating to the 12th century.
The visit itself is quick: step into the courtyard (always free), then head to the Memorial Room of the Defenders of Dubrovnik on the ground floor — a quiet, powerful space commemorating those who died defending the city during the 1991-92 siege. Photographs of each young defender line the walls with their birth and death dates, most in their twenties. It reframes everything you have been photographing outside. Thirty minutes is enough; go in the morning when the courtyard is still cool.
