Why people stay in Cavtat
Cavtat is the small coastal town everyone recommends when they want to send you somewhere calmer than Dubrovnik itself. It sits on a wooded double-lobed peninsula 18km south of the city, near the airport, with a horseshoe harbour, a palm-lined promenade, and just enough of an old core (Renaissance mansions, the Vlaho Bukovac painter's house, the Ivan Meštrović-designed Račić family mausoleum on the wooded hill) to keep an afternoon interesting.
This is the honest choice for people who want a resort town — good hotels with pools right on the water, a real sand-and-pebble swimming setup, water taxis to Dubrovnik every hour in summer for $10 each way, and dinner on the harbour without cruise-ship menu prices. Skip Cavtat if you’re here specifically for the walled city; it's a 40-minute bus ride each way and the last bus is at 11pm. For a family week with pool time, it's stronger than staying in town.
The big Hotel Croatia on the west peninsula runs $200-$320 in summer with private beach access. Mid-size hotels on Šetalište Rat and around the harbour offer $150-$220 with sea views. Apartments in the residential streets uphill are $90-$140 with kitchens, five minutes' walk to the water. Avoid rooms on the main road (Ulica Tiha) into town — bus and airport transfer traffic. The best value is a harbour-view apartment on the east side of the bay, quieter and closer to the ferries.

Getting around Cavtat
Bus 10 runs Cavtat-Dubrovnik (Pile) every 30-60 minutes, $5, taking 40 minutes via the airport road. The airport is 8 minutes away by taxi ($15), making Cavtat the easiest base if you have an early or late flight. In summer, water taxis to Dubrovnik Old Harbour run hourly, $10, 45 minutes, much more scenic than the bus. Parking in Cavtat is metered on the harbour, $3 an hour, or free 200m uphill in the residential streets.

It's the best base for that scenario. The airport is 8 minutes away, hotels have real pools, water taxis reach Dubrovnik in 45 minutes, and prices are 25% below town.
Uvala Tiha is a proper pebble beach with sunbeds, calm water, and family facilities — better than any beach in Dubrovnik proper except perhaps Sveti Jakov.
