What to expect at Fort Imperial (Mount Srđ)
Fort Imperial crowns Mount Srđ, the 1,352-foot ridge behind Dubrovnik, and was built by Napoleon's forces in 1806-1812 to hold the newly conquered Republic. In December 1991, it was defended by a handful of Croatian soldiers against a full Yugoslav Army assault — a siege that lasted eight months and became the pivotal battle of Dubrovnik's Homeland War. The fort was heavily damaged, and today its scarred interior houses the Homeland War Museum: uniforms, artefacts, photographs, and video testimony that tell the story of that defence and the wider 1991-95 conflict.
The mountain itself is the reason most people come. From the terrace beside the fort you look straight down onto the Old Town, the walls, Lokrum, and the whole Elaphite chain — arguably the best single view on the Adriatic coast. Take the cable car up from Ploče (3 minutes, $30 return), spend an hour at the museum and viewing terrace, then either ride down or walk the Serpentine trail (45 minutes) if the heat is manageable.
