An inland valley suburb near the Rijeka Dubrovačka fjord — cheap, green, transit-dependent, honestly not for most visitors.

Why people stay in Kono

Kono is a valley suburb north of Gruž, on the way out towards Mokošica and the Rijeka Dubrovačka waterway. Residential apartment blocks, a big Konzum, a couple of car dealerships, and one bakery — that's essentially it. What Kono has going for it is proximity to the fjord: five minutes' walk downhill and you’re on the calm waters of the Ombla estuary, where locals rent boats for $50 a day and there's genuinely good rowing.

This is a suburb-and-mean-it choice: apartments at $60-$85 a night, a bus every ten minutes to town, and no tourist infrastructure at all. Skip Kono unless you have a car, are staying more than a week, or have some specific reason (a wedding, a rowing team, an in-law). For everyone else, Gruž is only two stops closer to town and has actual restaurants at your door for the same money.

Apartment rentals in the blocks along Iva Dulčića and Splitska go for $60-$90 with kitchens and balconies. There is essentially no hotel product — one small pansion at $95 with breakfast. Avoid rooms facing the D8 coastal highway; it's the main road out of Dubrovnik and traffic runs all night. The quieter apartments are the ones facing the valley or the water, which most listings do disclose honestly.

Getting around Kono

Part of

Bus 1B runs from Kono via Gruž to Pile every 15 minutes, $2, taking 25 minutes to the Old Town. Line 8 goes further inland to Mokošica. From the airport, taxi $55 or shuttle to Pile then the 1B back out. Parking is free on residential streets. Walking to Gruž port takes 25 minutes downhill along the highway — not pleasant. Rental car is genuinely useful in Kono if you’re staying more than three nights.

Questions about Kono

Why would I stay in Kono?

You wouldn’t, unless you have a car, are visiting family, or want the cheapest kitchen apartment within the Dubrovnik city limits. It's a real neighbourhood, not a bad one — just no reason to pick over Gruž.

Is the Ombla estuary worth visiting?

Yes, actually. The fjord is unusual in the Adriatic — a proper freshwater river meeting the sea in a limestone gorge. Kayaking it is one of Dubrovnik's underrated half-day activities.
