Why people stay in Mokošica

Mokošica is the last real neighbourhood before Dubrovnik turns into countryside, at the head of the Rijeka Dubrovačka fjord about 8km from the walled city. It's split into two: old Mokošica (a small stone village on the water) and new Mokošica (1970s apartment blocks on the hill above). Both are quiet. The fjord here is a proper wetland, with reed beds, mullet, cormorants, and freshwater springs bubbling up at Komolac.

Stay here only if you have a car and a reason: cheap long-stay apartments, room to breathe, water sports at the fjord. The bus to town runs every 20 minutes and takes 35 minutes on a good day, longer in summer. There's essentially no restaurant scene, no shops beyond a small grocer, and nightlife is a beer on your balcony. Skip Mokošica for a short trip; consider it for a two-week family working holiday with a rental car.

Apartments in the newer blocks on the hillside run $55-$85 with kitchens, laundry, and often a small pool shared between four flats. A couple of family guesthouses in the old village on the water offer $80-$110 rooms with breakfast on a stone terrace. Avoid the road-front blocks on the D8; traffic is constant. The old village stone houses are the atmospheric choice, though small windows and no lifts are standard.

Getting around Mokošica

Part of

Bus 8 runs from Mokošica via Gruž and Boninovo to Pile every 20-30 minutes, $2, taking 35-45 minutes to the Old Town. From the airport, taxi $60 is the practical option; the shuttle-plus-bus route is over 90 minutes. A rental car is genuinely useful — parking is free and driving to the walls takes 15 minutes off-peak, 30 in summer traffic. The main highway (D8) is the artery for everything.

Questions about Mokošica

Is Mokošica too far from Dubrovnik?

For a short holiday, yes — you’ll lose too much time on buses. For a longer family stay with a car, it's a legitimate cheap-and-quiet option with real countryside 10 minutes away.

Can you swim in the fjord?

Yes, but it's freshwater-brackish and colder than the sea, and the bottom is muddy. Locals swim off the yacht club pontoons in summer. For proper sea swimming you’ll drive or bus to Lapad.
